In most cases with less RAM in the system, people are looking for help of “Free RAM” Software to free up the RAM for better performance. But, this Free RAM programs will not help alone to make your system perform faster. Actually many software programs which shows no effect on performance instead those will degrade your system performance. Before we recommend a FREE RAM program to download, let us see some tips to increase the system performance on a Windows XP OS machine.
AllwaysUnloadDLL
By adding a Registry key in the registry will help unload the DLL files for programs which are closed. But this is true only for Operating Systems prior to Windows2000. Windows XP will not support and there is no effect of using this method to Free some RAM space for other programs. If you have an operating system prior to Windows 2000, try the below trick.
Go to your start menu and start RUN. Now type “regedit” and hit enter. Now you have to go to the location – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/AllwaysUnloadDll/
When this “AllwaysUnloadDll” selected, you will see on the right pane “Name= (Default) Type = REG_SZ Data = 0″. Right click this (Default) key and select Modify. Now change this value to “1″ if there is “0″.
If there is no “AllwaysUnloadDll”, you have to create one key and change its value to “1″. Restart the system and this trick will start work.
(Note: This FREE RAM trick will only work on OS prior to Windows 2000)
To Free up a bit of clogged RAM
1-Hit CTRL, ALT and DEL to access task manager.
2-On the Task Manager, go to processes and click on the button that says CPU.
3-Look for explorer.exe and hit ‘End Process.’ If done correctly, your task bar will disappear.
4-Click on the ‘Applications’ tab, and then click the ‘New Task…’ button.
5-A small dialogue box will appear, with a few buttons and a text bar.
6-In the text bar, type in explorer.exe, then hit ‘OK.’
7-You’re done, and your computer may run a bit smoother
Disable unnecessary Firefox Addons to free some RAM
If you installed so many Firefox addons and you hardly using it, go and disable those addons. If you just going to browse the internet, start your Firefox browser on Safe Mode. This will help free some RAM space.
Restart Firefox
If you have multiple web pages open on tabs on Firefox and you are facing performance problem, it is time to close your Firefox browser. Closing the tabs will not help in this case. Once closed, check the task manager to confirm the Firefox process is not running. If it is still running, End the process by selecting the process and press End Process button. Now, restart Firefox. This will Free RAM space.
Page File
Increasing the page file is an additional option if you have less RAM Memory capacity. The default page file size is 1.5 times the RAM capacity. If you have more than one drive, moving the page file location to the other drive where the Operating system files and Program files are not installed. You can change all these setting by going to Controll Panel>System>Advanced Tab>Performance Setting button>Advanced>Virtual Memory>Change. If the page file is system manged, disable that. Now select the other drive where you want to move the Page file. Select custom size and enter your Minimum and Maximum page file allocation. Make your page file Minimum value to roughly 1.5 time your RAM Capacity.
Change your services setting
It is wise to change your Services setting to yur need to start services by Automatic, Manual or Disable it entirely. A good guide to follow is http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm (Highly Recommended)
Think before installing a Free RAM program
Before installing a FREE RAM program, if there is possibility to Upgrade your memory capacity by adding an additional memory module, do it now. There is no other method than this that will help you better to experience improved system performance. Free RAM programs are some time will degrade your system performance.
